Synopsis

Pa Ben, the storyteller, relates the tale of Miss Aggy, a helper and her clever, dark complexioned son Len who, she is determined, will be well educated and marry wisely. Miss Aggy has hopes to have Len marry Miss Margaret, the preacher’s daughter with lighter skin, ‘for advancement, advancement’. Not from the privileged classes, Len’s secondary school education at prestigious Munro College was traumatic. Years later he has the chance to avenge himself on his school tormentor and Miss Aggy has reason to question her own prejudices.
